Middlesbrough’s Labour MP Andy McDonald today celebrated Middlesbrough Council’s decision not to designate the Newfield Crescent/Bluebell Beck area of Acklam for housing. A consultation has been taking place and after significant campaigning from local residents, local Councillors and Andy himself, this site will be removed from the Local Plan for development.

Andy said: “I am absolutely delighted that the decision to preserve Bluebell Beck and not allocate it for housing has been taken by Middlesbrough Council. Great credit must go to local people who organised a fantastic campaign that captured the imagination of people in the local area. It has been terrific to work alongside residents and the local Councillors who supported the residents right from the start and I am extremely happy that all our collective representations have been successful and that the Council have made the right decision.”

“This is a great example of how the Council engages with local people, listens and acts when legitimate concerns are raised. Bluebell Beck is not a suitable site for housing. It is a beautiful green space for local people to enjoy. This consultation on land usage has been precisely that- a consultation- and I was confident that the Council would listen carefully to all the views expressed. They have indeed listened and I am delighted to say that the right outcome has been achieved.”
